Portal Bosque: building a forest where families come to create, not just consume 🌳🎨

Most spaces for families are designed around buying things or keeping kids “occupied”. Very few are designed as living ecosystems where children, parents and grandparents create, learn and play together.

In this episode, Matías Woloski and Mariquel Waingarten share the story behind Portal Bosque, a non-profit space in Uruguay that weaves together nature, technology and culture into a “portal” for families. Think forest paths, maker-style workshops, local artists, and activities where kids and adults sit at the same table — not in separate rooms.

They talk about the process of designing from scratch: starting from a piece of land and asking, “What kind of place would we want our own family – and other families – to grow up in?” From there, Portal Bosque became a lab for intergenerational learning, learning by doing, and cultural integration, all powered by local talent and a community that shares the same values.

In this episode:

  • 🌳 How Portal Bosque blends nature, technology and culture into one physical “portal”
  • 👨‍👩‍👧 Why family-centric, intergenerational activities are at the core of every program
  • 🎨 The role of local artists, educators and makers in crafting workshops and experiences
  • 🧠 Why creativity is “a muscle” — and how the space helps kids and adults train it
  • 🤝 How operating as a non-profit enables deeper, more genuine impact
  • 🌍 Their aspirations to replicate the model and inspire similar spaces in other places

Featuring: Matías Woloski & Mariquel Waingarten, co-creators of Portal Bosque
